I became a member around the time my little girl was 5. MOSI was a constant place to visit, walk around, talk, enjoy science, ask questions, buy toys, get lunch. MOSI was that fun place my little girl loved to go to. When she got old enough to go to camps, what good friends she made there. She still has many of those friends today. We still are friends with the families of the kids. MOSI families are the best and all are science and knowledge oriented with curious kids, involved moms and dads who have interesting lives apart from school and work.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 11px/normal "Trebuchet MS"; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 11px/normal "Trebuchet MS"; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
My son followed in his sister's footsteps at MOSI. Joe and I would go to MOSI and spend hours together roaming, reading, discovering, experiencing and making a MOSI day of it just like I had done with his sister. He's loved the camps so much over these years, that he started volunteering this past summer. He's so enthused that he's putting in 8-9 hour days as a volunteer. He enjoys explaining and showing the younger kids all the cool things MOSI has to offer.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 11px/normal "Trebuchet MS"; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 11px/normal "Trebuchet MS"; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
Now my daughter is 26 and she has her own family. Her little boy comes and enjoys looking at all the MOSI kids at kids in charge. I am sure when he's old enough, he'll be going to camps at MOSI. If MOSI hadn't been there to create heroes and stars of mathematicians and scientists, I think my daughter's life would be wholly different.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 11px/normal "Trebuchet MS"; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

The Tampa Bay area is enriched with all the science and math exhibits and interactions MOSI provides, the environment where intelligent kids are encouraged to be nerds and not only feel rewarded and accepted, they are rewarded and accepted. MOSI provides families the backdrop and milieu for raising intelligent, happy, well-adjusted kids who know about our big world and understand the discoveries human kind has made in our world. MOSI gives those kids the social rewards to be intellectual and encourages them to make their own discoveries in this amazing world.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 11px/normal "Trebuchet MS"; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

Thanks to you, MOSI people in the past, all the donors and volunteers that make MOSI the treasure of this area. It has been the place where I can see hope for our future.

have had the opportunity to experience MOSI’s Idea Zone, you are aware of the
exciting and creative ways we allow children to learn, build, and create in
this “do-it-yourself” laboratory. This holiday season, Santa will be taking
over Idea Zone. The innovative design studio has been transformed by Santa into
what is now a Christmas workshop. The space will be an opportunity for visitors
to give back to their family this holiday season with gifts that come from the
heart. Idea Zone will allow Children to use the creative technology lab as a
place to make stocking stuffers for everyone on their list. MOSI’s favorite
technology playground is Santa’s workshop for all of his little helpers to
spread the Christmas spirit.

I can’t wait to head down to Santa’s work shop and create a gift for my brother
using this 3-D printer. Since my brother loves to fish so much, I will design a
fish on the computer and when I press print, the printer in the picture will create
a 3-D plastic fish!

I am most excited for this event because I get
to see children giving back. Kids tend to get caught up in their own Christmas
lists and they often forget about Mom, Dad, Grandparents, or anyone else that
deserves some holiday cheer. Santa’s Workshop in Idea Zone will remind kids
about the important people in their lives and allow them to create something
special for the ones they love. I can’t wait to see all of the creations coming
out of Idea Zone this holiday season. Santa’s Workshop will be available with the
purchase of a regular admission ticket and will last from now until December 31st.
Although it is only November, Christmas will be here before you know it!

have had the opportunity to experience MOSI’s Idea Zone, you are aware of the
exciting and creative ways we allow children to learn, build, and create in
this “do-it-yourself” laboratory.

I can’t wait to head down to Santa’s work shop and create a gift for my brother

fish on the computer and when I press print, the printer in the picture will create
a 3-D plastic fish!

Who doesn't enjoy a nice blast from the past?
Starting this week, MOSI will be celebrating the popular social media trend
“Throwback Thursday” (#TBT) with a different IMAX movie beginning every
Thursday. These IMAX movies will be classic favorites from the past.

Throughout this celebration of Throwback Thursday,
you can enjoy different IMAX films that are sure to get your adrenaline
rushing. The first four in the lineup are Everest,
Top Speed, Journey Into Amazing
Caves and Coral Reef Adventure. Which film is sure
to make your adventurous side come out? Since scuba diving is one of my
hobbies, I think I’d definitely have to see Coral
Reef Adventure.

Everest is the first Throwback Thursday film, which will
run this week from Nov.21-Nov. 27. Everest
takes you through a tragic and inspiring journey to the top of Mount Everest. This film shows a team of climbers who
have to continue their climb even after several fellow climbers die during the
ascent.

Drug abuse is a serious issue
amongst teens and adults today. All drugs can be harmful, even prescription
drugs when they are abused. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse,
young adults are the biggest abusers of prescription pain relievers, ADHD
stimulants, and anti-anxiety drugs. The best way to stop children and teens
from going down this path is to educate them, and MOSI is doing just that.

MOSI is also hosting a safety
disposal site for prescription drugs. The DEA’s National Prescription Drug
Take-Back Initiative is Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. People in the
community can safely dispose of their unused, unnecessary or expired
prescription medication. There are 4 sites total, with MOSI being one of them.

is all about the evolution of recycling, and we’re getting ready to open it and
show the world.

MOSI sealed and buried a time
capsule full of recyclables in 1993 to examine and teach the future generation
how technology has advanced in the world of recycled materials. The time
capsule will be unveiled at 12 p.m. Saturday, September 21. The capsule can be
found at the base of Recyclosaurus Rex, the huge dinosaur standing guard at the
front of MOSI. The artist who built this environmentally terrifying creature,
Terry Klaaren, will be visiting MOSI for the unveiling.

Here at MOSI we strive to make
education fun, and this recycling lesson will be one the kids enjoy. “(The time
capsule) is a symbol of everything MOSI is and has been to the community for
the past 20 years – as science, technology and the world of recycling has
evolved, MOSI has been there, helping to facilitate and educate, while keeping
it fun and interesting,” said MOSI’s President and CEO, Wit Ostrenko.

This evening, MOSI will be hosting the popular Food Truck Madness event featuring,“Monsters After Dark” from 6p.m. until 10p.m. This event will allow foodies to combine their love for science and food all in one event.

I must say, I am most excited for the food trucks attending this event. In my experience, food truck cuisine has always been some of the most delicious food that fits my college student budget. I plan on getting a little something from a few different trucks, so that I can enjoy a variety of the delectable options.

You can expect to see some of Tampa’s best food trucks at this event including: Rollin Zoinks, which is known for its awesome wraps, Maggie on the Move,which offers mouth watering Mediterranean cuisine, Renny’s Oki Doki, will bringing some Asian fusion flare to the mix, and Monsta Lobsta, for all of you fresh seafood lovers out there. Be sure to click on the food trucks’ Facebook links to get your appetite going. Pictured are just a few of the dishes I plan on trying. Some of the other popular food trucks to look out for tonight include, Jimmy Meatballs, Sarge’s BBQ, Ain’t no thing, Lizzie cakes, Pasta Bowl and more.

After filling up on the most scrumptious eats in Tampa, take advantage of the last weekend of MOSI’s Sea Monsters Revealed exhibition. The exhibit exposes some of the most mysterious creatures of the ocean.

My personal favorite is the preserved giant squid which is deemed the largest in North America. The exhibit also allows people to take pictures from inside the jaws of a giant Megalodon, touch live creatures, and view a pregnant silky shark and her babies. This will be one of the last chances to visit the exhibit before it leaves MOSI forever.

This fun filled night has something for everyone. Be sure to plot out your night by visiting our website at MOSI.org to see all of the available exhibits, as well as checking out the Food Truck Madness Facebook page to learn more about the event. Today marks my first day as an intern at MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) and so far it has been a day of nostalgia. Growing up in the area, I spent a lot of time here with school field trips and summer programs. Some of my interests are because of MOSI. When I tell my friends that I wouldn't mind being a storm chaser, they stare at me with a look that says "What is wrong with you?" Then they ask why and I tell them that MOSI showed me the informative and interesting side to tornadoes and hurricanes. As destructive and dangerous as they are, there is something beautiful about them.

During my trip down memory lane, I was taken to a new area (well, new to me) called Kids in Charge. This area is for kids 12 and under, and in my opinion, for anyone who is still a kid at heart. The most interesting thing to me was Mission Moonbase. You start in a room that makes you seem like you are on a spaceship launching from Tampa, FL to the moon. Then you exit the room and enter into "The Moonbase" which is an informative/interactive area. Is it possible that adults will enjoy this more than their kids? Next to Kids in Charge there is a ropes course and zip line and one day I will find time (not a work day) to go out there and enjoy. I could see myself spending several hours on the ropes course, the zip line and in the Kids in Charge area.

MOSI currently has an exhibit called Sea Monsters Revealed, that shows the internal structure of sea creatures throughout the oceans. The term "Sea Monsters" is used because when we do not fully understand a creature, we refer to it as a monster. The exhibit is designed to help us understand these marine creatures and shows various types of sharks, squids and fish, some that I have never heard of.

As this was my first day, I was thinking I would do a quick tour, get acquainted with various staff members and be given something to work on as my first project. While all of those things did happen, I was also able to witness and be a part of the filming of a commercial. Luckily I did not have any speaking roles or things could have been really bad. I was able to get a few pictures from behind the scenes before it was time for my "close-up."

I know the rest of my internship will not be as simple as today, but just because I have to do actual work not mean that I cannot have fun doing my job. I am looking forward to the rest of my summer here at MOSI.

The Geocaching Challenge will take place from June 17 – 30 in the Back Woods preserve behind MOSI.

Using a handheld GPS or the Opencaching phone app, explorers can hunt down geocaches (different types of hidden containers) containing special prizes and coordinates to other geocaches on MOSI property. There are four Geocaches hidden in the Back Woods area of MOSI. The first three stages all have free prizes, as well as the coordinates to the next Geocache. For the bravest and quickest Geocachers, the very last prize in the expedition will be a raffle for an 8GB Apple iPod.

Other prizes inside the geocaches include MOSI tickets and IMAX Dome passes, travel tags and geocoins. The “treasure” will be available starting Sunday, June 17.

All prizes are first come, first served. Though the contest doesn't officially end until June 30, the treasure may have all been taken by that time. Because of the nature of this game, MOSI cannot guarantee any prizes to Geocachers even if the Geocache is found within the contest dates.

Here’s the first clue. You must find this Geocache to get the coordinates to the second, third and fourth Geocache. Inside the fourth Geocache is the real treasure – a chance to win an 8GB Apple iPod!
This howler monkey is from the site of Grand Chaco, in Argentina, South America. It has not been radiocarbon dated, but it is likely that the monkey was naturally preserved in the warm, dry environment of the area and prepared for display, with a rhea feather skirt and feather wreath around its head and neck. Get ready, Tampa Bay. MOSI has hit the mummy-lode…literally. MOSI’s newest exhibit, Mummies of the World, is now open! Come join us as we journey as far back as 6,500 years and attempt to unravel the secrets that mummies hold about the past. This highly anticipated attraction boasts a staggering collection of 150 mummies and artifacts, more than enough to keep both the kids and adults interested.

For the science lovers out there, Mummies of the World is a fascinating mix of old and new, including engaging interactive multi-media exhibits that illustrate how current science tools enable us to study mummies in new and non-invasive ways, allowing unprecedented insights into past cultures and civilizations. Mummies of the World demonstrates real advances in the scientific methods in which mummies are studied, including Computer Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), DNA analysis and radiocarbon dating, allowing researchers to learn about the lives, history, and cultures of the mummies.

MOSI also offers guests the opportunity to learn about mummies from the comfort of MOSI’s IMAX® DOME Theatre with the film Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs. This film follows researchers and explorers as they piece together the archeological and genetic clues of Egyptian mummies. Both the exhibit and the film will leave you with much insight into past cultures and civilizations.

Check out the party pictures on our Facebook Page.

Our guests had so much fun with this activity that we’ve decided to put the cut-out and the instructions online so that you can do it at home or school. Below are the eight simple steps to follow to make a fantastic flying monster. We recommend this activity for kids 5 to 8 years old. For younger dinosaurs, have an adult perform the step involving scissors and tape. Enjoy!

Step 1: Download and print the Pteri the Pterosaur cut-out. Click Here.

Step 2: Color in your flying monster with lots of different colors. Don’t forget the wings!

Step 3: Using a pair of safety scissors, cut along the dotted line and recycle the extra paper.

Step 4: Cut a one-inch vertical slit over the ‘X’ on Pteri’s belly. It easiest to do this if Pteri is gently folded in half long ways or “hotdog style”.

Step 5: Cut a one-inch slit into the top of a regular clear drinking straw. Bend the two halves backwards to create a ‘T’ shape.

Step 6: Slide the straw through the slit on Pteri’s belly so that the ‘T’ shape is against the colored side of the paper. Then tape the two prongs of the straw onto the colored side of the drawing.

Step 7: Loosely tie a pipe-cleaner around the straw at the base of the back of the drawing. Tape the two ends of the pipe cleaner down at the end of the wings.

Step 8: You’re done! To make your monster fly, hold the knot of the pipe cleaner and move it up and down the straw. Pteri’s wings will fold in and out to make it look like he is flying.

We want to see your creations! Upload your pictures to Facebook and tag ‘MOSI’ or post on our wall to share.

Don’t forget to come see the Flying Monsters movie in our famous IMAX Dome Theatre! It’s only here for a limited time, so don’t let the time fly by. Check out the daily show times here on our website or to purchase tickets ahead of time, give us a call at (813) 987-6000.

Have fun with your monsters!
Museum of Science & Industryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04339773473973982461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-213701294917397977.post-5691418931007101052011-10-12T09:31:00.009-04:002011-10-12T16:32:17.417-04:00Now Open: "Target America: Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause"MOSI recently opened its newest exhibit, Target America: Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause. This exhibit created by the Drug Enforcement Administration has been seen by over 20 million people since it first opened in 2002 and started its national tour.

The exhibit’s main goal is to educate visitors on the dark side of drugs and their impact on the human body, families and on the world as a whole. The exhibit has also been expanded to educate visitors on Florida’s history as a drug gateway and local drug issues such as “pill mills.” As visitors enter the exhibit, the grim wreckage of a drug-related car crash greets them and immediately shows the damage drugs can cause to users and innocent bystanders. To the right of the crash wreckage is the section of the exhibit detailing the various ways drugs will damage the bodies of addicts.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 181px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ8j9bWVaHNb5j9mswaP9KRLZDU0QyKXPAN_6Ae53ogvmSv-Q5OOtX6FM4qTayDIYyNDNVwM2sJT6d0MKFqjduvF_7b-_0vvB3B8bqyER7glE-iDrGqHX9kQHJDCb9L_KscK2wx65yr0Lk/s320/TA6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5662598343563166434" />

Throughout the exhibit, visitors can view informative displays on topics ranging from drug production to money trafficking as well as re-creations of an Afghan heroin “factory,” a jungle cocaine lab and a methamphetamine motel cook room.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 181px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAfvDwokPS2iZsg0JiIhszeA8XFiqxoAsZ1B3tQtduQlWXkVgGiTqZQ5CS0iBCc0oXUZ8-EpeWj5rwBW8sUQCEShQAWDvliEePjFiaQkJ1rayvSRHB0SyNobzA8uIw0vHJzmm6F52R5-Wo/s320/TA7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5662598587427991570" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 181px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ9QNIL7hg3zuNbCVZU70QhqTTzrGubdg7PbJYl6zgdHvebt1wlq4G4E6v3bO_g6Pa-8cR_7lUWGz2IasGLqzZhLiKqSmgUfpnbAjmGhbf4MzxWKVGC1zA18TdJXcctiNdSd0U-rBfVaKM/s320/TA4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5662598583045743010" />

The damage to the environment caused by drugs is also featured in a section of the display which details the destruction left by drug production across the globe.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 181px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivrV_6t9l9g5mybeUKoXEIafTjFkIIKvXySzL_wpQrfpCZ4NKw48VFwrdx90dLUa22D9oOeQGoOI67CnaHvwRjHpafa5FTcPjrDveyh7yF5pzlp-eUYvduk80dF0Jku7-pbBViM0gIcasI/s320/TA3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5662598854783249714" />

One of the most emotional sections of the Target America exhibit includes a wall of lost talent and two thick binders filled with stories of the casualties of drug use. They also tend to be more stable and easier to cross.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_OvvEYntAZY2rLkPqCjPwEKdqZZKtMKk2HPnNy39bvurIYbmcRKEs26xf4QASJx7ZmB-zADvVO4wFemFWJE8-mdmLXE7xqI8UfmXLVc4aMtUqO0664LZFMY9GLDH2Y82QscLcPDdTj7fR/s320/3WE.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654904347322631122" />

The middle level contains slightly more challenging obstacles. While it may feature many of the same types of crossings, these crossings tend to sway the challenger slightly more.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 179px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZcEeSy333NLPM1NInbIlZrp2Y90fXs-usLFCd4I8cZH6AaiESjR3Un1FtWJb7j8GN0NfeFjDIPEsNnE5blPTvReiXf47tanPsDJ8a5dosJ8O_iRYKydU5dGG6hmRUcRCdZaRTpnxfYXqb/s320/4WE.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5650018607835600786" />

The upper level is slightly smaller than the lower two but features the best views and most rewarding obstacles of the course.
